8. Development of Penicillin
In 1940, Australian scientist Howard Florey and his team succeeded in isolating penicillin, an antibiotic that would revolutionize medicine and save countless lives. It was the first effective antibiotic and would become a key tool in treating bacterial infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis.
Prior to Florey’s discovery, bacterial infections had no effective treatment and could cause severe illness or even death. With the development of penicillin, however, these infections could be treated with a simple course of antibiotics. This not only saved countless lives but also enabled people to recover from serious illnesses more quickly and effectively than ever before.
